1984 Peugeot 505 STI – today’s tempter

Tough, comfortable and cheap

Pug 505s have a good reputation.

Described by one motoring writer as a rolling understatement, Peugeot’s 505 series was a well-regarded follow-up to the super tough 504 and its predecessors. It has a reputation for offering an exceptional ride, particularly over rough roads.

In many respects, the 505 was a very conventional car: four-cylinder engine in most (there was a V6 available), sometimes a diesel, with rear-wheel drive and of course a choice of auto or manual transmissions.

A few variants were made including wagons, and all-wheel-drive. Prototype coupe and cabriolet versions were built but didn’t get to market. Production lasted from 1979 all the way through to 1997 – China was the last country to build them. Some were assembled in Australia, in a plant in Heidelberg, Victoria.

This car is the 2.2lt petrol version, which means it should have around 130hp, with a five-speed manual transmission.

A 1984 model, it’s old enough for club permit use in most states.  The current owner says it’s in good condition, has been in their care since 1993 and comes with a roadworthy certificate. Priced at $4000, it’s located in NSW.
