Euro design helped put Mazda on the map

Old Japanese cars are very much back in favour at the moment and this Mazda wagon offers an interesting twist on the plot.

Known as the Luce in other markets, Mazda’s 1500 and 1800 series sedans and wagons were probably most famous for the styling penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. At the time it made these cars a stand-out when many Japanese models tended to have a pretty stodgy appearance.

The 1500 and 1800 had conventional four-cylinder engines, though the domestic market also received a Wankel Rotary version that was known as the R130.

Four-speed manuals and three-speed autos were available, with the latter reported to be pretty sluggish. The 1800 was built from 1968 through to 1973.

Wagon versions are a rarity in Australia. In fact, we can’t recall the last time we saw one!

This car has had a few mostly cosmetic alterations, which are listed by the owner.

The NSW-based car comes with spares and is listed at $12,000.
