Ford Galaxie + Lotus Elan – Auction Action
Big boomer and bargain of the month
1963 Ford Galaxie R-code
We all have a bit of a soft spot for ’63 Ford R-Codes here in the Unique Cars office and this Galaxie sailed through Mecum’s Kissimmee sale, quite bafflingly registering only the faintest ripple of interest. Still, it did find a new keeper who probably couldn’t believe his or her luck. With 455 horses under the hood and only 13,000 miles on the clock, this Rangoon Red edition has a well-documented history, having been featured in countless US enthusiast publications. It’s clearly had some money spent on it and if you were looking for a manual-tranny muscle car before muscle cars became a parody of themselves, this is about as good as it gets.
Sold: $68,400
1990 Lotus Elan SE turbo
Drum roll please for my Bargain of the Month. Yes, it’s a wrong-wheel drive Lotus. As arse-draggers go, the Elan SE Turbo is right up there with the very best, Autocar magazine in the UK describing it upon launch as 'the quickest point to point car available'. Despite having been owned by more people than Audley Harrison, it’s been treated well. With 135,000 miles on the clock, it might not quite reach 100km/h in 6.5 seconds any longer, but it’ll still have enough about it to paint a big smile on your face when pointed at the squiggly way home.
Sold: $7550
