One bargain and one potential record-breaker

Corvette C2 + Tucker 48 – auction action
Corvette C2 turned out to be a great buy and should keep going up.

1966 Chevrolet Corvette C2 convertible

Bargain of the night at Shannons’ late 2016 Melbourne Summer Classic sale? If pushed, I’d pick this Corvette C2 drop top. While there are many who don’t see the point of the C2 without the beautiful hardtop glasshouse, this convertible’s keen price is ample recompense. It’ll probably need a bit of fettling to bring it up to show spec, but that’s part of the fun and you’ll meet a great bunch of people in the process. The best part? Throw the hood back, and get all the sound effects of that sweet 327ci small block amped up to 11. Milano Maroon paint with black interior work really well so the last bidder standing will have left Warrigal Road with a humungous smile on their dial.

Tucker 48

The 44th of the 47 extant Tucker 48s, this is the fabled ‘barn find’ car, that was garaged when Ronald Reagan was in the White House and only recently discovered and recommissioned. In July of 1973, Lester A Sheaffer, a Tucker enthusiast in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, sold the car to Millard "Skip" Groh, owner of a marina in Freeport, Ohio. The car was brought to Freeport, where reportedly it was driven only three times and for about 15 miles. Mr. Groh then laid wood planks down on the gravel floor of a metal building on his property, drove the Tucker onto them, and closed the door, and the car remained hidden away for the next 34 years. With 7900 miles on the odometer, it’s remarkably well preserved and only required light refreshing to run.
