1973 Citroen SM – today’s tempter

One of the great Euro GTs

Citroen SM rates as one of the most interesting GT cars ever made.

Citroen’s purchase of Maserati in 1968 was proof enough the French manufacturer had more than a passing interest in building higher performance cars than its iconic DS series.

Work was underway for an ‘S’ performance car project and the results were shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1970.

The SM essentially combined Citroen’s at times quirky approach to engineering with the character of a Maserati. In this case you ended up with a large two-door with a spectacular wind-cheating body (wind-cutting sharp snout with a sharp cut-off at the rear), Citroen’s unique adjustable suspension and a respectable top speed of 220km/h or 140mph.

Acceleration was nothing to write home about, as the 2.7lt (later punched out to 3.0lt) V6 was pushing along a car that weighed a solid 1400-plus kilos. Nevertheless it turned out to be remarkably light on fuel and was, according to contemporary road tests, incredibly comfortable as a high-speed tourer.

The car you see here is a 3.0lt five-speed, which is probably the combo to have. Located in Mortlake, Victoria, it comes with a roadworthy certificate and is priced at $35,000.
