European hot hatch market gets serious

Who would have thought that one day your hotted up hatch would bring serious money at auction? Well, Unique Cars magazine, for a start.

About a year ago we came up with a list of future classics you should keep your eye on.

One of them was the Peugeot 205 GTI - a really nippy little gem with enough power to be entertaining and seriously nimble handling. All up, a worthy competitor for the VW Golf GTI, aimed at the same market.

Believe it or not, a 1989 Peugeot GTI scored a staggering 30,938 pounds (AU$53,000) at the Silverstone classic car auctions on August 31.

Apparently the car is in exceptional condition, with under 13,000km on the clock, and a history that says it's been under cover all its life. Evidently, it's as close as you'll get to finding a new one.

The auctioneers claimed: "The vehicle looks, drive and smells as close to new as you would find," said the vendor. "In other words, it is as close as you would ever get to being able to walk into a Peugeot dealership in 2016 and purchase a brand-new model of what is generally recognised as being the best hot hatch ever built."

Even so, that's an incredible amount to pay.

Given the way auctions work, it also suggests there are at least two punters out there who believe there is a future in collecting this style of car.

Of course the challenge is finding one that hasn't been thrashed out of existence!
