Ferrari to celebrate 50 years of Dino at Motorclassica 2015
Ferrari will celebrate 50 years of its Dino moniker with a tribute display of Ferrari and Fiat models at this weekend's Motorclassica in Melbourne
50 years of Dino
Ferrari will celebrate 50 years of its legendary Dino nameplate at the annual Motorclassica event this weekend, from October 23 - 25 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.
The Dino name was first used on Ferrari cars with vee engines in the late fifties and comes from the nickname of Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredo, who died in 1956 while at the same time working on a vee-engine project.
As a tribute to Alfredo's memory, the 'Dino' name was used to designate any model with a vee engine throughout the early sixties and then again in 1965 with the 206 SP (and S) sports-racing model. This was also the first model to wear the stylised signature Dino badge.
Ferrari built three mid-engined models carrying the Dino name between 1968 and 1973. Fiat also used the name with its limited run of Coupes and Sypders fitted with the Ferrari V6 Dino engine - originally developed for Formula 2 racing - between 1966 and 1973.
Motorclassica's Dino display will include three 246 GTs and a pristine pair of the later 308 V8-engined wedge. There will also be a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta, a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Coupe, and a 1990 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta with Ferrari Classiche classification on show.
Demand for the Ferrari Dino has seen market values soar recently, with an Australian record being set earlier this year for a 1973 246 GT sold at a Shannons auction in Sydney for $522,000.
Ferrari Australasia's CEO, Herbert Appleroth says, "A Dino display of this many classic vehicles is unprecedented in Australia, and we are excited to be officially involved in Motorclassica in 2015, the 50th anniversary year of the Dino."
