Some serious money and mouthwatering metal passes across the block at Theodore Bruce auction
For most of us, Motorclassica represents a wonderful opportunity to sticky beak some exotic metal that we’re unlikely to see anywhere else, but for a few punters the event is a retail opportunity with some rarefied metal going under the auctioneer’s hammer. The Theodore Bruce auction had a stunning array of classics in the catalogue, with the top price being paid for a 1914 Rolls-Royce Landaulet Silver Ghost, which saw the gavel fall at $662,500.
Ferrari celebrated fifty years of Dino at this year’s show and a Dino 246 GT also figured in the sale, with bidding reaching $486,000. A tidy Porsche 911T netted $204,900 while a rare 1949 alloy-bodied Jaguar XK120 convertible fetched $635,000. At the other extreme, a 1963 Ford Falcon sedan saw someone drive off with a bargain, interest drying up at just $2200.
A gorgeous BMW 635CSi in JPS tribute colours didn’t quite make pre-auction estimates, selling for $32,000, but the Ferrari 365 GT4 BB, the Alfa Romeo TZ1 replica and the 1974 HDT Torana SLR 5000 all failed to find new keepers. Best buy of the auction? For my money that would have been the classically elegant Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC that went for a modest $8000.
