Mossgreen drew many eyes to its Melbourne podium on Sunday during its ‘Collectors' Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia’ Auction which showcased among its antique treasures, some truly special vintage cars.
Fronting the auction was a varied taste of classic Jags that drew bid after bid in a frenzy to snatch up the prized lots, at the forefront of which came two Jag XK’s.
One, a 1950 XK120 Roadster blitzed past its expected selling price of AU$105,000, with the hammer falling at an astonishing AU$161,000. The second, a 1958 XK150 Fixed Head Coupe became a similar story as it raced past the $100,000 mark and landed on a very respectable AU$120,750.
Adding another notch to Jag’s belt, the 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12 Roadster sold beyond estimates that were lower than that of the XK’s, and actually outsold its Jaguar cousins as the bidding settled on an amazing AU$230,000.
This huge winning bid could in part be attributed to the Australian heritage of the car, having had confirmed ownership of some 30 years, as well as the ‘Jaguar Trust Heritage Certificate’ that came with the E-type, which certified its authenticity and solidified its value.
Despite huge results across the board, it wasn’t all sunshine for Mossgreen as its titular lot, the 1924 Bentley 3-Litre Vanden Plas ‘Le Mans’ Style Tourer just fell short of its low end estimates with a still respectable winning bid of AU$264,500.
As an 80’s build, made from genuine ’24 parts, including a 1924 3-litre engine, number AP325, there was high expectations placed on this classic Bentley and it only just sold short of them. Despite not making estimate, it’s still a great result for the lot.
Other cars that had a good showing included the 1974 Aston Martin V8 Series III ‘Sunroof’ Coupe which destroyed expectations at AU$189,750 and the 1973 BMW 2002 Baur Cabriolet that went for a respectable AU$19,550.
As the Classic Car section of the auction drew to a close, the success was clear to all, with almost every car starting a bidding war and selling well over estimate.
