Mitsubishi Starion turbo – today’s tempter

Fancy a dose of eighties JDM style?

There’s no doubt that Japanese performance coupes are becoming hot property, with ground-breaking designs such as the Datsun 240Z and Series 1 Mazda RX-7 now commanding big money.

Less high profile but arguably just as interesting are gems like Mitsubishi’s Starion. This was a classic wedge-shape 1980s design with a traditional rear-drive platform that came with 2.0 or 2.6lt powerplants. As is often the case with cars of the era, the engine variations were a little more subtle, as the 2.0lt turbocharged four could be had in two or three-valve spec.

The Australian market got the two-valve engine, which was good for a claimed 125kW. However the domestic market three-valve claimed 147kW and that’s what we’re looking at here.

Our recent buyer guide on these cars suggested around $25k was top dollar for a local model, but we’d expect a really good JDM to command a premium over that.

The NSW-based example offered here is a five-speed manual (there was also a four-speed auto) and is on the market for $30k. If it’s everything the owner says, it’s probably well worth a look.
