Dune Buggy – today’s tempter

Quintessential beach toy

For a vehicle with such humble origins, the dune buggy had a spectacular cultural impact. It scored cameo roles in countless movies and TV shows, while becoming instantly recognisable even to non-petrolheads.

The most successful version of the concept is credited to Californian Bruce Meyers. He passed away earlier this year at the ripe old age of 94.

His creations, based on a shortened VW Beetle platform, were successful at generating PR but less so when it came to money. Meyer’s first company was founded in 1964 and went bust in 1971. It re-emerged under a new structure some time later, but has always been beseiged by knock-offs of the original design.

This example is based in Western Australia and the seller says it was professionally built, and later restored, by a local VW specialist. It’s running a 1600 engine, comes with its own transportation trailer and is priced at $40,000.
