Mercury is one of those nameplates that often costs a lot less than its more famous siblings.
Mercury 1964-73
Not many of Mercur’ys really muscular 1960s-70s models are available locally but a scan of USA offerings shows interesting cars available at affordable prices.
Big-block Cyclone coupes at $40-50,000 are well below the price of a 7.0-litre Cobra-Jet Mustang and a 1970s Cougar will likely generate more in shipping costs and taxes than it costs to buy.
Full-size Mercurys sometimes pop up for local sale however they don’t usually match the condition or specification of cars in the US market.
1960s Cougars are available locally in decent numbers and remain cheap at less than $30,000.
Cougar convertibles are considerably less common than coupes yet likely to cost only 25 per cent more.
Cougar 1967-73 $25,145 [9]
Cougar Conv 1967-73 $29,250 [2]
Montego/Cyclone 1966-73 $25,650 [5]
