Big prices and bargains
The Shannons WInter Classics auction concludes tonight and there is a mix of big prices and bargains.
At the bang-for-buck end of the table is a 1989 Fox-platform Mustang GT convertible (lot 110) with no reserve and with morning bidding sitting at $12,000.
Though not everyone’s favourite shape, the Fox cars have picked up a bit of a following in the USA and are thin on the ground over here. This one has the right spec: a 302 V8 and five-speed manual.
If local metal is more your style, this 1980 family workhouse Holden VC Commodore wagon (lot 114) is worth a look. It’s in survivor shape and claims some recent mechanical work.
The spec is the 2850cc in-line six matched to (unusually for a wagon) a four-speed manual with floorshift. Bidding is at $11,000 with no reserve.
Up at the glam end of the market, arguably the most interesting car in the entire auction is a 1964 Lotus Cortina Mk1 (lot 141) claiming an excellent local race pedigree.
It is said to be one of three works cars sent to Australia at the time and for a while was in the hands of the Geoghegan brothers. Bidding is at $181,500, while the estimate is $200-250,000.
Top of the line when it comes to biding is a 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT (lot 166), an early Australian import with what seems to be a well-recorded history. The description mentions a lot of restoration work. Bidding has reached $530,500 against an estimate of $600-650,000.
