Lamborghini Countach name returns

Stealing the limelight at the Monterey Car Week was what Lamborghini did, whipping the covers off an all-new, limited-edition Countach, the LPI 8000-4 that celebrates the original model in its golden anniversary year

Based on the underpinnings of the Sián hypercar, the new-generation, all-wheel drive Countach has an estimated pricetag of A$3.66 million and features a naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine, plus a 48V electric motor giving it a combined power output touching 600kW and 720Nm. Bolted to it is a seven-speed gearbox. Zero to 100km/h time is 2.8 seconds. From standstill it hits 200km/h in 8.6 seconds and its top speed is 355km/h.

Production is limited to 112 units, that number referring to the project name ‘LP 112’ used in the original Countach’s development, with the LPI – Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido translating to Longitudinal Posterior Hybrid.

Unlike its descendants the new Countach isn’t a sharp angular car, featuring softer curves at the front along with a less harsh tail. Gone is the spoiler and the add on air intakes of previous models have made way for a more integrated design. However, the hallmark scissor doors remain.

Extensive use of carbon fibre throughout including the front splitter, window surrounds, door mirrors, engine cover and rocker panels, as well as in the cabin has the Countach topping the scales at just 1,595kg.

In creating the photochromatic roof that, at the touch of a button, goes from solid to transparent and the movable air vents, Lamborghini used 3D technology.
Managing many of the Countach’s controls is through an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen that has a host of apps, music streaming, Bluetooth and sat nav to help you find the most challenging, read fun, roads.

Deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2022 with one pre-sold. There is no word on whether we will see it in Australia.

In front of 5000 guests attending the Quail Motorsport event at Pebble Beach Stepehen Winkelmann Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini said, “The Countach LPI 800-4 showcases the next chapter of Lamborghini in an electrified world while celebrating one of our most iconic models,”.

“The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade. It upholds the Lamborghini tradition of looking forward, of exploring new design and technology avenues while celebrating the DNA of our brand.”
