Acclaimed British funk band frontman is a noted car collector of the highest passion
British musician Jay Kay is known for two things.
One, being the eclectic frontman of the Grammy award-winning funk band Jamiroquai; and the other, is being one of the most enthusiastic car collectors and petrolheads in the pop music world.
At one point, Jay Kay owned over 100 cars, including a one-off 1965 Ferrari 330 GT Shooting Brake. His first car ever was a BMW 1602 (which he still owns!), and his next was “six-cylinder 280 SE, stack-headlight Mercedes” – which he drove to a gig one night, and spent the entire evening sitting on a wall watching it in fear of someone damaging it – yes, this guy’s one of us!
But the British musician’s car collection will be three pieces smaller following Bonhams’ Bond Street Sale on December 7 – which will see three top-shelf collectibles auctioned from Jay Kay’s personal collection.
The first is a true classic blue-chip: a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 coupe in ‘lightweight’ trim. It’s one of 200 produced, and is amongst the most desired variants within the broad church of air-cooled 911 collecting.
Bonhams predict the Carrera RS 2.7 to sell for between AU$1.4 and AU$1.6 million.
Jay Kay will also be selling a modern counterpart to the Carrera RS 2.7 – with Bonhams auctioning his 2004 Porsche Carrera GT. The Carrera GT was powered by a bespoke 5.5lt V10 developed by Porsche, with its project development roots tracing back to the 911 GT1 and Le Mans Prototype-inspired road racers of the 90s. Porsche originally planned to produce 1500 Carrera GTs, but just 1270 were sold by the time production ceased in May 2006.
Bonhams estimate the car to fetch between AU$1.2 million and AU$1.4 million.
The Jamiroquai frontman will lastly be bidding farewell to his 2016 Ferrari F12tdf at Bonhams’ Bond Street Sale. A limited-production, high-performance special built atop the standard F12 Berlinetta, the F12tdf represents the most hardcore and viscious of Ferrari’s current generation of front-engined V12s. The car was bought new by Jay Kay, and has travelled just 895 miles from new.
The pre-auction estimate for this Prancing Horse is pegged at AU$1.3 million to AU$1.4 million.
