Melbourne's Lygon Street hosted a fantastic display of Italian cars, scooters, motorcycles and culture for the Italian Auto Icons event on Sunday 6 March
Perhaps it was Melbourne’s great weather on Sunday or the appeal of high-calibre Italian machinery on show, because the Italian Auto Icons event in Lygon Street, Carlton, was sometimes standing room only.
Part of Lygon Street was closed off to traffic, allowing admirers to move freely among the display and enjoy the great Italian food and refreshments the area known as Melbourne’s ‘Little Italy’ has to offer.
The invited Italian car, motorcycle and scooter clubs displayed their vehicles for a fine visual exhibition of their respective marques. Members of the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Lancia, Fiat and Alfa Romeo car clubs presented their vehicles combined with new exotic models from Zagame’s current range, including the new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider.
Some rare and collectable cars were on display, including a 1913 Fiat, a 1959 Maserati 3500 GT Coupe plus three Alfa Romeo Duettos to celebrate 50 years of of the Duetto launch at Geneva in 1966.
One little car that created a lot of attention was the only example in Australia of a 1958 Vespa left-hand-drive two-seater, in original condition.
There was also a 1949 Lamabretta ice cream van restored to original condition, one of only five in world.
As the display came to a close, the crowd moved around to continue browsing along Lygon Street and the departing Lambos provided the sound effects!
