2021 Market Review - Holden HQ-HZ Monaro/GTS/Ute/Sandman
These once were the cars that Holden enthusiasts with kids, a mortgage and company Commodore would buy to go cruising on a Sunday.
HQ-HZs looked the part, sounded OK and weren’t, back in 2010, going to cost much more than $30,000. Now if you want a 5.0-litre GTS two-door, pop a 1 in front of that decade-old price. These aren’t the kind of car that attracts mega-buck investors either, so soaring values mean there are typical enthusiasts digging deeper to afford one.

V8-powered commercial vehicles are increasingly seen as alternatives to performance passenger models and, unless you are buying a genuine Sandman, considerably cheaper.
Less than $40,000 buys a freshly painted, nicely trimmed 5.0-litre ute or even a genuine V8 van that hasn’t been snapped up to become a ‘tribute’.
