Historic Ferraris lead RM Sotheby’s Petersen Museum auction

Blend of new and old metal highlights the evolution of the supercar

The Petersen Automotive Museum is a landmark for car-nuts around the globe, and a beacon for automotive excellence.

On December 8, the museum will play host to one of RM Sotheby’s landmark auctions, offering a diverse blend of both new and old blue-chip collectible cars.

The sale is headlined by two very desirable and very rare Ferraris.

The first being a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 bearing unique coachwork crafted by Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale.

Vignale has a long history with Ferrari, spanning back to the 50s – though this coachbuilt shooting brake, however, is reportedly the last Ferrari ever built with a Vignale body.

It’s a unique example with provenance and something that appears to be rather real-world practical in theory. In actuality, you probably wouldn’t want to take this wagon on a Bunnings run any time soon.

The second outstanding Ferrari is the 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti.

This car was the official Scuderia Ferrari Works car for 1956 and 1957, and comes with tremendous racing history. It podiumed at the Mille Miglia, and the 1000km of Buenos Aires as a Scuderia Ferrari car, and took out 1st overall at the Nassau Trophy and Memorial race with Stirling Moss at the wheel.

It’s one of three surviving examples, out of four ever produced and has been restored in-house by Ferrari’s Classiche department to its 1957 12 Hours of Sebring livery.
