Historic Aston Martin Group C racer on the block

One of four hand-built specials

Headlining the Silverstone Auctions competition car sale next year, is a 1989 Aston Martin AMR1 Group C racecar with a lengthy racing history.

The car is estimated to fetch £500,000—£550,000; that’s around $850,000—$935,000 in local money.

The “last, lightest and most powerful of just four Works built cars”, this Aston racer was piloted in three world championships in the late 80s by motorsport legends Brian Redman, David Leslie, David Sears and Le Mans winner Stanley Dickens .

“This car represents a major piece of motor racing heritage with unquestionable provenance, superb build quality, and with a proven ability to win” says Nick Whale, managing director at Silverstone Auctions.

After a long world championship stint with the factory team, and after being upgraded to a 740bhp 6.3-litre engine, the car was sold in 1990. The ARM1 was then ‘professionally maintained and regularly driven at an international level in historic Group C.

“Group C racing stands out to this day as one of the most sensational and spectacular eras in the history of motorsport, and this car would be an ideal entrant to the Classic Le Mans race in 2017 and historic Group C racing championship.” Whale explains.

While the car has seen multiple owners throughout its life, it has been consistently driven and competed in, taking its most recent podium finish at the Le Mans 24hr support race in 2014.

The car is said to be presented in excellent condition and is offered in its original ‘Mobil 1’ livery. The package also comes with running spares, wheels, jacking tools, a data loaded laptop, fuel churns, wheel braces and spare brakes.

The auction will take place on February 24 at the Race Retro car show at Stoneleigh Park in England.
