Grandpa’s HX Holden ute – today’s tempter

One-owner workhorse needs a new home

Yep, alright, it sounds too cliched to be true – for sale, Grand-dad’s one-owner, low-mileage ute. But this one rings true.

HX Holden utilities from the late 70s in most cases are well-worn workhorses – remember they were built well before the current trend for glam performance utes took off in a big way.

That said, a few adventurous souls went out and bought the upmarket Sandman ute from this series, and that’s now a very valuable bit of kit.

The example comes from the opposite end of the brochure. It’s a Belmont, which means anything more than the very bare essentials was listed as an option. Under the hood we have a 202ci (3.3lt) red motor, mated to a three-speed manual with column shift.

The seller mentions some minor cosmetic issues such as surface rust and a few scrapes and bumps, however it’s also claimed to be a low-miler with all the original books.

Finding good solid examples of this generation is getting tough, and this seems like it might be one of the better ones we’ve seen in recent months. Located in Vic, it’s priced at $5000.
