If you’re old enough to remember The Munsters TV series and two spin-off movies, and your pacemaker is fully charged, you might want to take a blast in this particularly claustrophobia-inducing creation.
The original Drag-U-La (the GCMM exhibit is a faithful replica) was created by auto artiste George Barris and featured in Hot Rod Herman and the Munster, Go Home! movie.
The body on the original is an actual gold-painted funeral casket with the eight organ-pipe exhausts producing a suitably non-funereal note from the high-revving, 350hp, twin four-barrel 289 Ford Cobra engine.
In the movie, Grandpa Munster builds and races Drag-U-La to win back the Munster family’s cemetery coach.
Drag-U-La is one of the museum’s most popular attractions and while Carl has other plans for the GCMM’s activities at this year’s Coolie Rocks On festival in Coolangatta in June, hands-up who reckons he should take the ultimate compact car for a run at Coolie!
