One owner “Sunday family car”, garaged all its life, no rust and in great condition
Ford’s Mustang-bred XR was a breakout success for the marque, so they couldn’t be blamed for remaining tight-lipped about the XT update until it burst into showrooms in 1968.
Visual distinctions for the new XT were a new grille, rear indicators, hupcaps and badges; with split-system brakes, larger tyres and electric windscreen washes found themselves under the skin.
The XT range comprised of three trim levels, in four-door sedan and wagon guise, as well as two-door utility and van bodies.
Under the bonnet, buyers could opt for either a 188 or 221 inline-six, or two variants of the 302 V8 – a basic and a high-output GT version.
They had motorsport pedigree too, with an XT GT outrunning the ’68 Bathurst-winning Monaro to the chequered flag at the 1969 Surfers Paradise 12 hour. Three XT GTs also entered in the London-Sydney Marathon; finishing third, fifth and eighth.
This XT 500 wagon is a little scant on details, as its engine and gearbox aren’t stipulated.
However, the listing describes it as a “Sunday family car” owned by one very fussy owner for over 50 years. It’s reportedly been garaged all its life, has no rust and is described as being in perfect condition.
It looks stunning in the single photo attached to the ad, but if the car is as good as it’s described, it could be quite the find!
The car is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $33,000 (negotiable).
