2023 Market Review - Ford Mustang V8/Fastback/GT390 1964-1968
Australia loves the Mustang and literally thousands of 1960s models live here. Asking prices for mainstream notchback coupes with small-block engines have grown by around 50 percent in recent years and even when the market decline begins to bite they won’t fall to pre-2018 levels.
Fastbacks are up in line with North American values, which are in the US$60-70,000 range. Convertibles are rising too, however $90K for a local, RHD car is a stretch.
| Past Blast: 1968 Mustang GT500 ‘Eleanor’
The model that should have been grabbed when it was relatively cheap is the 390-engined GT Fastback – the revered ‘Bullitt’ Mustang. These had their first 15 minutes of big screen fame back in 1968, then later provided the basis for the infamous ‘Eleanor’ so it isn’t hard to understand why top-class cars bring more than $150,000.
