Ford Mustang Boss + VW Thing + Toyota Supra + Mercury Cougar – Auction Action 429

Recent auction highlights from around the world...

1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429

Sold: $393,295
Mecum

If you are going own a Mustang why not make it the ultimate one. The 69 Boss 429 is arguably one of the rarest and most valuable muscle cars. In 1969 just 850 KK models were built. KK stands for Kar-Kraft, the mob that made Moffat’s legendary Mustang. This one has undergone a two-year restoration and still has its original build sheet. Finished in Candy Apple red it has a four-speed manual box, Traction- Lok rear end, competition suspension and disc front brakes. It rolls on 15-inch chrome Magnum 500 wheels and period correct Goodyear Polyglas F-60 tires. What a gem!

1973 Volkswagen Thing

Sold: $26,000
Bring A Trailer

Who remembers Thing from The Adams Family? This is not it, but it’d be just as handy. The Thing or Type 181 is Volkswagen’s answer to the Mini Moke. In its bum is a 1.6-litre flat four bolted to a four-speed manual. This Thing with 24,000 miles looks to be in good order having undergone a repaint and some mechanical smartening up. It won Best in Class at the 25th Annual Volkswagens on the Green in Littleton, Colorado The windscreen and doors are removable and it comes with a set of side curtains.

1993 Toyota Supra Sport Roof

Sold: $80,700
Bring A Trailer

This 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo with only 44,000 miles, sports a rear wing and removeable Targa roof with factory 17-inch alloys. In silver with black leather it would be a super long durance tourer. Powering the Supra is a 320 horsepower three-litre turbo inline six paired to a four-speed auto. Apparently it’s accident free with history dating back to the 1990s.

1977 Mercury Cougar

Sold: $6300
Barrett Jackson

Calling this land barge a Mercury Cougar is blasphemy given the badge once adorned a decent muscle car. With metres of bad taste metal encased in chrome, this matching number example with no reserve has been garaged since 1998. An original rust-free survivor with 71,000 miles, original vinyl roof and interior and 302ci V8 power, it’s perfect for those channelling their inner Clark Griswold.

1973 De Tomaso Pantera

No sale: $64,322
Mecum

There’s a bit of a Ford theme happening here. With a 351 Cleveland and ZF five speed transmission keeping the rear wheels apart, the De Tomaso Pantera would still give many of today’s supercars a fairly hard time. This is one of just 277 produced in white and it has only 33,000 miles on the clock. It rides on Campagnolo wheels, has a delta wing along with power windows and aircon. Though bidding stalled at USD$45,000. So as they say, the bid goes on…
