Will this Ford GT mimic the HT Monaro result earlier this month?
Shannons is offering one of those bellweather lots that will show just where the upper midrange of the local classic car market is at the moment – a 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT.
Long regarded as the most desirable generation of the not-so-humble hotted-up family sedan, the XY runs a 351 Cleveland V8 claiming around 300 horses, with a choice of a four-speed manual transmission or three-speed auto.
Not a whole lot were made: 1557 across 1970-71 with a further 300 of the now very expensive GT-HO version, which was essentially a race homologation car.
This particular example is an auto with what appears to be an exceptionally well-documented history behind it. It’s had three owners, all of whom are known, and comes with the original set of numberplates (not in current use) along with a lot of documentation.
Not surprisingly it’s had a paint freshen-up over time, though it looks like no more than that, rather than a top-to-toe restoration. The colour is what it was built with.
So, how much? Shannons estimates it at $100-125,000.
The last hero car it sold, an HT Monaro at the Sydney auction earlier this month, went a long way past its $130-150,000 estimate, hitting $225,000.
However it takes only two very determined people to send an auction off the gauge, so this GT may provide some perspective.
Results from the November 7 Sydney auction.
