Upmarket family car looks like a gem
It’s hard to imagine that an old family sedan like this once would have been worth no more than a four or five thousand, however that is the case. How times have changed.
This Fairmont GS was actually a fairly upmarket thing in its day, with bucket front seats, plus the ‘grand sport’ pack that included stripes down the body and ‘nostrils’ in the bonnet. It’s also running the 302ci (4.9lt) V8 up front, with a three-speed automatic transmission.
These XB series Falcons were a relatively minor cosmetic update from the XA predecessors, though front disc brakes were now standard and the options on offer had improved.
Two sixes and two V8s were offered, along with three or four-speed manuals, plus the auto. Body styles included sedan, station wagon, utility and panelvan, plus of course the now highly-prized two-door coupes. Just shy of 212,000 cars were built in this generation, from 1973 to 1976.
The dealer with this example says it shows just under 85,000km and is a matching numbers car. Certainly the appearance in the photos tends to bear out the low mileage claim – it looks a peach.
The $65,000 asking price is substantial, but if you had to have a premium V8 of that era, a resto could easily add up to that sort of number. It’s located in Vic.
