Fiat 1500 MkII – today’s Euro Tempter

Relatively rare here, but huge numbers made worldwide

You used to see a few of these things getting around Australian roads, but most must have succumbed to rust by now as they’re a rare sight these days.

Which is funny, given some 1.9 million are said to have been made across the world – albeit in several countries and under a few different brand names. Poland, South Africa and Yugoslavia were among the nations where Fiat 1300s and 1500s were built under licence.

They were a pretty straight-forward car, available in sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon form. Some features were reasonably advanced for their time, such as the disc front brakes and full synchromesh for the four-speed column-shift manual transmissions.

Built 1961 to 1967, the Fiats were regarded as comfortable and good-handling family transport with a few luxury touches such as dual headlamps

The 1500 claimed 75 horses in its original guise.

This example claims to be in great condition and the Tasmania-based owner is asking $19,000.
