Looking back through the Unique Cars classifieds...

Ferrari Daytona replica - Advertised June 2006

You would be a mug to confuse this with a real Daytona Spider but the venture (which produced around 450 completed cars and kits before the lawyers’ fingers tightened) so worried Ferrari that it took action to stop it. Four of these Ferrari/Corvette tricksters were used as stunt cars on TV cop series Miami Vice, creating a mystique that in recent years has seen every second car seemingly advertised with claims of MV history. This quite likely was the only one to come here and, depending on how far the rust had extended into its Corvette underpinnings, the money being sought looked fair.

Was: $35,000. Now: $55,000-60,000

Messerschmitt - Advertised November 1992

We may have featured the mighty Messerschmitt before, however, the market is moving so fast they are worth another look. Officially named  ‘Kabinenroller’ (cabin scooter) the originals came with a 175cc two-stroke driving just the one rear wheel, tandem seating, an aircraft-style hinged hatch and handgrips with which to steer. This is the later 200cc version which sold in Australia until 1959 when Goggomobil became a threat. A few have been offered here in the recent past, at prices up to $40,000. Some may have headed for Europe where excellent KR200s can cost A$70,000.

Was: $10,000. Now: $60,000-70,000

Mitsubishi Galant GTO - Advertised May 1999

Staring hard at the photo and re-reading the advertisement several times provided no hint as to why this scarce Galant was being sold at ridiculously low money. $3000 at the end of the 20th Century would buy a Sigma in good condition or a decent Magna but this was a rare and specialised Mitsubishi model that hadn’t been offered for regular sale in this country and wasn’t that common in other places, not even Japan. One was advertised locally a few years back at $13,000 but surging demand in the Japanese domestic market has seen quality cars pushing past $30,000.

Was: $3000. Now: $25,000-30,000

Reader's One That Got Away:

Holden HZ statesman

My uncle owned a beige Caprice for years equipped with the trustworthy 253. It was a great old car that he loved, he offered it to me for $500 prior to trading it in for a ‘90 Mitsubishi Magna! I rejected it at the time as I was still a student who had nothing to his name. I now more than ever wish I could have afforded to keep the Caprice in the family.
