Alfa Romeo G1

From Unique Cars #300, Jun/Jul 2009

The oldest Alfa Romeo in the world. The sole survivor of just 52 built, and boasting the largest engine – a 6.3-litre side-valve six-cylinder  – ever fitted to an Alfa Romeo. If ever a car was unique, then this is it.

One of just seven G1 two-seat sports roadsters imported to Australia, our featured example arrived here in 1921 and was sold for £850 to the owner of Cressy Station, near Winton in Queensland.

Later used as a farm hack, it fell into the hands of an enthusiast who rebuilt it over a 10-year period with the help of another G1 found in Victoria.

It’s now in the safe hands of Sydney-based Alfa Romeo importer, Neville Crichton, who shipped it to California for the prestigious 2005 Pebble Beach Concours where it won a "Third in Class" trophy.
