HSVs score big
While there is evidence the classic car market has softened off in recent months, the Shannons auction which concluded last night comprehensively proved there is still money out there for the right car.
Among the top-scorers in the car price stakes was a 1990 VN Commodore Group A SS, number 073 (lot 212), which went for $266,000. Its sibling, number 166, went for $126,000 (lot 231).
A good barometer of the market overall is the fortunes of lot 213, the 1971 Ford XY GT, which went for $232,000.
Also impressive was the $48,500 fetched by an ultra-clean-looking and now quite rare 1976 Datsun 180B SSS (lot 222).
Those prices made cars such as lot 195, the 1998 BMW M3 coupe, look like solid buying at $74,500.
There were also a few bargains. We reckon lot 115, the 1971 Lincoln Continental MkIII Coupe, looked like a lot of car for the money at $10,500.
Highest price paid at the auction was for NSW numberplate 92 (lot 56) which sold for a mind-boggling $1,215,500 million.
