Bonham’s Scottsdale auction in January previewed by two very special cars
Bonhams is set to hold their next annual sale at the Westin-Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale Arizona on January 17 2019.
The last curated Scottsdale sale by the esteemed auction-haus, saw an ultimate sell-through rate of 90% and over $25 million in total sales.
While the auction is still some time away, and the full list of lots has yet to be selected (Bonhams are still open to consignments), they’ve already announced two very special cars as preview lots.
The first preview lot released by Bonhams is a rare 1952 Maserati A6G/2000 Spider, with a sleek coachbuilt body by Pietro Frua draped over its chassis.
The car represents just one of three examples featuring the coachbuilt topless skin, a staggering production pool made even more so by the fact that just 16 A6G/2000s were built originally, featuring coachwork by Pininfarina and debuting at the 1950 Turin Motor Show.
The Maserati A6G/2000 features a 2.0lt inline-six with single overhead camshaft and triple carburettors allowing for a total power output of between 67-75kW, and conversely to the preceding 1500, the new-for-1950 model now featured helical springs at the rear.
The second preview lot boasts a bit more racing pedigree, in the form of a 1959 Lister-Jaguar Sports Racer, that won that year’s SCCA National Championship in the C-Modified class. It was one of two cars originally delivered to Briggs Cunningham.
It was ran by Team Cunningham and was piloted by Stirling Moss, Walt Hansgen, Ivor Bueb, and Bob Grossman.
Its sister-car wold for AUD$2.8 million in August 2013 at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, then again in Monaco seven months later to the tune of AUD$1.9 million.
This exact car went to auction via Mecum in August 2017, but failed to meet its reserve after bids topped out at AUD$2.3 million.
Bonhams has yet to publish estimates for both vehicles but will be available closer to the auction date.
