Frank Binking will be unleashing his ex-Bob Muir Army Reserve XD Falcon Group C at the Sydney Retro Racefest at Sydney Motorsport Park on Queen's Birthday weekend, June 11-12.

Starting life as a highway patrol vehicle, the XD was built by Bob Muir using the running gear from an a ex-Colin Bond Falcon XC Touring Car and debuted at the 1980 Hang Ten 400 driven by Bob and Kingsley Hibbard. Bob continued to race the car until 1982 where it spent time racing as a sports sedan before Frank Binding bought it in 2000.

As the car had maintained much of its Group C identity during that time, Frank spent a year treating it to a full restoration and the car was brought back to its original 1981 spec.

"We basically took the car and built it up to its factory spec. We fully restored everything. All the mechanicals came out, we stripped it back to a bare shell and went from there," says Frank.

"Not a single race meeting goes by when somebody doesn’t come up to me with a little bit of information on the car that I didn’t know, or who used to be in the Army Reserves and work on the car, or would see it out at Bathurst. Bob Muir comes out time to time and looks at the car and will occasionally have a bit of a moment for it," he adds.

WEEKEND OF RACING

As well as the Group C and A Australian touring cars of the Heritage Touring Car series, the Sydney Retro Racefest event will see a huge collection of historic racing and sports cars from Formula 1, classic sportscars and more.

Spectator passes are available through the Sydney Motorsport Park website and will also be available at the track on both days. Entry for kids under 12 is free.
