Racewars invites hot metal out West...
COGS OF WAR
There aren’t many gigs in Australia where you can drive your supercar and highly-tuned speed machine in one place without concrete and the fun-police kerbing your enthusiasm.
But two and a half hours NW of Perth on the tiny desert runway of Wyalkatchem Airport, for one weekend of the year, you can. Racewars is an orgy of the most exotic carbon-fibre wizardry and the most highly modified pocket rockets. They gather to record the fastest times and speeds down the runway with no horsepower restrictions. Where do you sign? At their website https://www.facebook.com/theracewarsgroup
The fastest were a mixed bag, separated by the blink of an eye. The Anthony Scali-built AWD Skyline with its "traction limited" 1000hp RB32 engine cracked in incredible 306km/h and did the 1000m dash in 17.7 seconds. Its number plate ND4SPD was appropriate for the Canning Vale, WA-based Pro Tune builder. Second fastest went to Caillim Betts’ 1993 Toyota Supra which managed a 292km/h top and 20.3second sprint. Third outright went to the Jose Jardim Supra which hit 290km/h and stopped the clock at 23.9 seconds.
Other stand-outs included Tim Slako’s grunt-happy HSV W427 (only 137 exist) which set a respectable 253km/h and Antonio Locatori’s beastly FPV F6 Typhoon hit 287.9km/h for the Aussie ilk; Mike Bowser’s angry yellow Camaro SS (above) stung with a 246.6km/h/22.2sec speed/time and John Kopcheff's 2009 Audi RS6 with a berserk twin-turbo 780hp/800Nm V10 hit 261km/h, clocking 20.5 secs.
Racewars is about one thing: dirty raw speed. It's a case of go hard or go home.
