Big Aussie hero cars are noticeably absent but strong mid-range may attract fierce bidding
It’s the medium range cars that seem to be the stars of Shannons next classic car auction in Sydney, with a swathe of Euro, American and Aussie offerings available with Guiding Ranges below $50,000.

Noticeably absent from the auction are the big-name Aussie hero cars we’re used to seeing. No HDTs or Brocks this time around; but a 1971 XY Falcon 500 on offer for an estimated $20,000-$30,000 (No Reserve), as well as a modified 1961 EK Ute – estimated to fetch $22,000-$28,000 – could spur on keen bidders after an affordable classic.
A 1991 HSV VG Maloo Ute (#99 of 132) straddles the $50,000 marker with a pre-auction Guiding Range of $45,000-$55,000 (No Reserve), and a 2005 manual Monaro CV8-Z slips past with an estimate of $50,000-$60,000.
Some modern classic Euros on the upswing are up for grabs for some temptingly modest estimates. A more powerful South-African-spec Porsche 928 is on offer for a very affordable $20,000-$30,000 (No Reserve), though it is an automatic which does hamper is long-term value. A more laid-back cruiser in the form of a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E220 Coupe is also up for grabs, also with a No Reserve Guiding Range of $20,000-$30,000.
A slight budget stretch might also afford you a very desirable 1959 Kombi ‘Split Window’, with a No Reserve Guiding Range of $55,000-$65,000.
And if you like your classics American, there’s two RHD iconic 60s muscle cars crossing the block late in the night; a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback, and a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS Coupe, both with a pre-auction estimate of $45,000-$55,000.
At the top-end of town, sits a 1988 BMW E30 M3 Evo II – a blue-chip modern classic bearing a pre-auction Guiding Range of $100,000-$120,000. It’s number 276 of 500 Evo IIs produced and was originally delivered to the UK, before landing in Sydney via Hong Kong.
The final three lots of the night are the big blue-chips, and wouldn’t look out of place on the manicured lawns of Pebble Beach.
A 1970 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series II sees a Guiding Range of $120,000-$140,000, followed by a 1960 Porsche 365B 1600S Coupe with a Guiding Range of $150,000-$180,000.
The final lot of the night is a gorgeous 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Convertible, in well-maintained condition and sourced from a long-term owner. The pre-auction Guiding Range is pegged between $160,000-$180,000.
