1931 Sunbeam 23.8 hp Weymann Sports Saloon

The Sunbeam name was registered in 1888 by John Marston for his cycle manufacturing business in Wolverhampton. By 1901 motor car manufacture had begun and a newly incorporated Sunbeam Motor Company Ltd came into being in 1905 in order to separate it from the cycle business.

During Edwardian times Sunbeam was to achieve an enviable record in competition, with cars setting a number of records at Brooklands. They were also to hold the World Land Speed Record on several occasions and by 1927, Major Henry Segraves 1000 hp Sunbeam raised the record to 203 mph. This was later to be raised to 231 mph by Segrave, driving the legendary Golden Arrow Sunbeam at Daytona Beach in March 1929.

Through the 1920s Sunbeam offered a fine range of high quality cars, and 1923 was to see the introduction of the 20/60 model which was considered by many to be a better motor car than the Rolls-Royce 20. Powered by an OHV 3.2 litre engine, the 20/60 was capable of over 70 mph when fitted with touring coachwork and the motoring journalists of th time were highly impressed by the refinement and advanced specification, which included powerful four wheel brakes.

Late 1930 was to see a new model of the 20hp - now known as 23.8, powered by a 3317cc engine and available with several different styles of coachwork and it is a Sports saloon with coachwork by Weymann that we offer here.

First registered on 30th November 1931, this car has been in the care of the present owner for the past 13 years. The engine, gearbox and rear axle have been overhauled by marque specialist Jim Catnach and only around 2500 miles have been covered subsequently . The braking system has also been rebuilt and the interior refurbished as necessary with new carpets.

The bright work has been re-plated and the coachwork repainted from the bare metal and in all, a considerable amount has been spent in order to ensure the car is in excellent order all round. It is capable of a comfortable cruising gait of 60 mph by virtue of a higher rear axle ratio, making for effortless longer journeys.

This car has enjoyed several trips to France in recent years and was driven over 135 miles to our Garage.

A high quality motor car from one of Britains finest manufacturers of the period, it represents very good value indeed.

A substantial file of bills etc and a copy of the Drivers Instruction Manual are supplied along with much additional information.
