The Wolverhampton firm of Sunbeam built its first car in 1899, but it was in the Louis Coatalan years of 1909 to 1933 that the firm achieved the ranks of greatness, producing a string of record breaking racing machines and outstanding sports saloons. These included the fabulous Sunbeam 1000hp which set a land speed record of 203.792mph in 1927, and the smooth and potent 12/16. Their passenger cars were noted for their excellent build quality and refinement, as typified by the Sunbeam 16 of the late-1920s.

The original Sunbeams were very well engineered, high quality reliable cars - and a great reputation on the track. The 16.9 was their most successful volume model.

The example you see here is the larger and imposing Sunbeam 16.9 Tourer powered by a six-cylinder over-head valve engine mated to a four speed manual gearbox.

The interior of the car is just lovely with very high quality leather upholstery with door trims and carpets all in a very attractive darker Blue which gives the car the comfortably opulent look and feel normally associated with an English gentleman's club.

'HY9404' has within her history file a selection of photographs showing the restoration work being undertaken. Unfortunately these photographs are not dated but our investigations point towards this work being completed in the late 1990's to early this millennium.

Since our original purchase the car has only covered around 250 miles, being used purely for our own enjoyment. Always totally reliable cruising comfortably at 50mph and always maintaining good temperature, even when stuck in traffic.

In conclusion I would summaries 'HY9404' as being a superbly presented vintage Sunbeam. An understated and nicely mellowed car just short of concours condition- maybe it is exactly what a good vintage car should look be like. It starts easily, it is extremely pleasant and quiet to drive and it gives the impression that it will just keep on going for as long as you like to wherever you like!
