Description
Notes from the owner:
A beautiful Luxury 7-seater four door Limousine with a Straight 8 engine of 5525 cc with 132 horsepower at 3400 rpm. It has a wheelbase OF 136 inches, a length of 17 foot 8 inches and weighs approximately 2 tons.
At a time, the car was purchased, the average wage in NZ was one hundred pounds ($200) this vehicle cost the Owner (Mr G. Husher) the sum of one thousand three hundred and eighty-six pounds ($2,772).
The Late G. Husher was the Millionaire founder of the National Tobacco Company in Napier, which was later purchased by Rothmans who were subsequently purchased by British American Tobacco before the enormous Napier Factory closed its doors in 2006 with all production going off-shore. As well as having a substantial home in Napier, Mr Husher had a second home in Masterton which he frequently visited in the Studebaker which was chauffeur driven.
In 1971 Brian Jackson of Auckland purchased the car for his museum. The car at that time had only travelled 47,050 miles from new and still had the original paint and upholstery. The car has never been restored but has been repainted many years ago. The paint is worn but still presents very well. The car has now travelled 86,600 miles with a full mechanical overhaul over the past 10 years. (Receipts for $50K plus). The interior remains in good original condition.
Of all the Studebakers made between 1922 and 1966, the 1933 Speedway models were the rarest and only about 6 have survived from the 616 that were built. Supposedly this is the only R/H drive one remaining. (This information was provided by a former Owner who was a member of the American Studebaker Club.) These cars were ahead of their time with the Regals having Power brakes, Startix auto start, Free wheeling gearbox, courtesy lights, folding Auxiliary seats and twin side mounts as standard.
