This car was built in Sydney by an engineer named Ted Read who built several Australian specials. The car has been extensively restored over many years and is now used in Classic Sprints and Hillclimbs. It has participated in the Noosa Hillclimb and won its Group Lb class two years running at Leyburn Street sprints in Queensland. It has also been used as a show car where it gains much interest and the occasional trophy.
The car is very well sorted and has a current Cams logbook and Certificate of Description making it eligible for any Cams approved event in Australia. The car has raced extensively over its lifetime at Winton, Amaroo, Oran Park, Surfers Paradise, Sandown and Lakeside raceway. It comes with the early Cams logbooks showing racing history and previous owners, new Cams Logbook and C of D.
There is also much documentation from Ted Read, the original builder telling the story of his design and original photos of the car newly built that support its provenance. There are also several photos from motoring magazines of the car racing in its day.
The Read Special was designed with varying components available in the 1950s and runs an early Holden Grey motor mated to an MG TC Needham close ratio straight cut gearbox, a Skoda Octavia independent rear suspension and brakes and a 203 Peugeot front suspension and brakes. According to the cars designer Ted Read, the car was designed using the inspiration of the F1 Mercedes W196 and mimics the Mercedes space frame chassis and design closely.
This is a very exciting car to own and use as it is very rare being a one off and is very well sorted for track work. Its value will of course only increase with time.
