The Porsche story is a fascinating one and its roots go back to the 1930s when Professor Ferdinand Porsche was instrumental in the design of the first Volkswagen and also Auto Union race cars. By 1939 he had built three Porsche cars to compete in the 800 mile race from Berlin to Rome. Unfortunately the race was cancelled due to the war and Porsche was forced to focus on supporting the German war effort, however, he had always wanted to build his own cars and that dream lived on. In 1944 Porsche was forced to leave Stuttgart and he set up a small operation in Gmünd, Austria. Soon after the Porsche family and many of their engineers were captured and sent to jail. Ferdinand Porsches son Ferdinand junior, or Ferry as he was known, was released six months later and he returned to Gmünd to rebuild the family company. Things moved quickly and Porsche was involved with cars again and shortly thereafter in mid-1948 the first Porsche 356 was built. It is understood Porsche built some 50 hand built aluminium bodied cars in their small factory at Gmünd before relocating back to Stuttgart, Germany. The rest they say is history as the 356 evolved into one of the most successful sports cars ever built. A hard act to follow indeed . . . but its replacement, the Porsche 911 went on to become a legend!

The Porsche 901, as it was initially designated, was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, however, when production commenced in 1964 it was sold as a Porsche 911. Interestingly Porsche was forced to change the name of its new model as a result of Peugeot having exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle!

The 911s trademark was that it was powered by an air cooled engine mounted in the rear. The model evolved over the years, however, Porsche remained true to the 911s original concept only changing to a water cooled engine with the 996 series in 1998. The 911 excelled as both a road car and as a race car and it is arguably the most successful sports car ever built. Today the 911 lives on and the latest 992 series cars, still manufactured in Stuttgart, are as popular as ever.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was introduced in 1983 as a successor to the 911SC. Interestingly it was the first time the Carrera name had been used since 1977. Visually the new car was similar to its successor, both internally and externally. The major change to the new car was its engine. Whilst based on the SCs 3.0 power plant, Porsche claimed the 911 Carrera engine was 80 per cent new. The capacity was increased to 3164cc and a revised piston design increased the compression ratio to 10.3:1 on all but North American cars. But the Carreras main innovation was its Bosch Motronic 2 engine management system. This was the first production 911 to feature an ECU to control the ignition and fuel systems. In addition, the fuel injection was updated to Bosch LE-Jetronic and the induction and exhaust systems were revised.

The upshot of these improvements was that power rose to 231bhp at 5900rpm, with torque hitting 284Nm at 4800rpm. Porsche claimed fuel consumption to be 10 percent better than that of the SC, because of the greater efficiency of the electronically controlled engine. The last of the 911 Carrera 3.2s was built in 1989 and the model was most popular with circa 76,000 cars built during six years of production. The approximate breakdown of models was c35,500 coupes, c20,000 cabriolets and c18,500 targas.

Today the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 is recognised as an 80s icon and these cars are now becoming highly sought after.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe. This particular car was sold new by Gullo-Haus Porsche Houston, Texas in the USA to a Paul Vercontaire. This factory 'black on black' car was delivered on the 21st August 1986.

The original delivery documentation on file confirms that this highly optioned 911 was delivered with the following: 018 steering wheel with elevated hub, 158 cassette-radio Blaupunkt Monterey, 197 stronger battery, 241 shorter shift lever for type 915 transmission, 323 sticker, without ECE-regulations, 341 central locking system, 395 16" Fuchs forged alloy wheels (front 6" with 205/55 tyres & rear 7" with 225/50 tyres), 454 automatic speed control, 474 sports shock absorbers, 484 USA symbols and lettering for switches and instruments, 533 alarm, 553 version for USA, Canada, 559 air conditioner and 650 sun-moon-roof. The list price of the car was US $42,288 and there were additional dealer options fitted, including an audio system, radar and custom wheels which resulted in a final sale price of US $51,258.

The service book has a number of entries, all from Porsche dealers in Texas, with the last being dated 22nd February 1992 at 64,076 miles at Porsche in Dallas, Texas. The CarFax on file notes that the car was in Cave Creek, Arizona and a title was issued in that State on the 31st August 1995 at 91,615 miles. By October 1996 the car was in San Diego California and there are many inspections noted on the CarFax with the last being on the 10th December 2012 at 161,849 miles.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was purchased from a dealer in California, USA in early 2017 and subsequently imported into Australia by a classic car dealer on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. There is an Import Approval on file dated 1st February 2017. The car was purchased by a Brisbane based enthusiast who has kept it in his private collection. The car has never been registered in Australia and today the odometer reads 166,606 miles. The car has recently been gone through and serviced by a local Porsche specialist and it is now offered for sale.

Today this car presents and drives exceptionally well. The paint work is in very good condition with the most noticeable blemishes being lots of small stone chips on the front of the car. The paint work has a high gloss and good depth of colour. The panel gaps are good and this looks to be a clean, straight car. The engine bay is also very neat and tidy and there is no evidence of any oil leaks. All of the engine bay stickers remain intact and are in good condition. The cabin looks to be original and in excellent condition for a thirty plus year old car and it belies the cars modest mileage. The seats, door cards, dash and instruments are all crisp and clean and there are no obvious flaws or damage. This car starts easily and it drives well. The photos really speak for themselves. The engine sounds 'on song' and the car pulls strongly through the gears. There are no rattles or squeaks and the car handles precisely and brakes as it should. It just goes about its business in that Germanic Porsche way . . . and in fact, it is just an absolute delight to drive! Everything looks to be in working order, including the factory sunroof.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 has books in the original pouch, the original delivery invoice and a list of dealer fitted options, a Carfax Report from the USA, tool kit, jack, an unused space saver spare wheel and a compressor that will accompany the car.

With many of these seventies and eighties Porsches either being modified or a little tired, it is so refreshing to be able to offer a very original and unmolested example. Even though the car is left hand drive, we understand that it can be registered in any state of Australia. Any inspection welcome.
