This MGBGT. LE left the Abingdon factory production line on 20th November 1980 and was despatched to its destination dealer L F Dove Ltd, Croydon, Surrey the same day. It was first registered on 20th February 1981 with registration number WGT 628W.
The LE was the last iteration of this iconic coupe and was described by the motoring press as the poor mans Aston Martin. The body paint and new interior combination certainly reinforce the description.
Having passed through numerous owners it was acquired by G&J Car Restoration Company based in Cambridgeshire. The owner of the company, a Mr Giampaolo, instructed his workforce to perform a full, bare metal restoration of the car to his exacting standards as he would keep the car as his own.
The result of the restoration to Mr Gs perfectionist demands produced the stunning vehicle that I bought from him in March 2017. I was delighted to bring the car home but was more than concerned with the poor road adhesion and brakes as the car had been standing for most of its life and the tyre walls were old and stiff.
The following days I joined the excellent MG Owners Club and purchased all the necessary new parts to replace those original parts which suffered from the inevitable deterioration over time and little use. The car has been fitted with new tyres, exhaust, battery, brake discs, callipers, pads, flexible fuel lines and brake hoses, coolant hoses and pipes, front dampers, suspension bushes, handbrake cables and much more.
To match the quality of the body and paint refurbishment Im afraid I spent more than is necessary on mechanical cosmetics such as new alternator, new alloy rocker cover, new electronic distributor and more. If you are into classics, you will recognise the wallet draining syndrome.
The biggest single expenditure was spent in renewing the seats and interior trim parts to replace those awful standard deck chair cloth seats which looked old and crumpled when they were new. I guess Ive already alienated some MG purists.
Look at the photos and I hope youll be impressed with the quality and appearance of this car.
I booked the MG in for MOT on 29th July and it passed with no advisories. The only minor faults are the tachometer hasnt worked since I fitted the new electronic distributor and there is a small paint defect on the n/s front wing.
Before you bid, I would ask you to consider travelling to see the car at my home just 12 miles west of Shrewsbury on the Welsh border. Alternatively, if you want more photos, please message me with the areas you want photographed together with your e mail address.
Unless the law changes, this car will become road tax and MOT exempt in November next year. Even so, the rubber bumper MGBGT is gaining value against the traditional favourite chrome bumper roadster as a younger generation classic enthusiast realises the benefits of low insurance premiums and greater security.
Reason for selling? Ive bought a Triumph Stag, my all-time favourite classic. Will I ever learn??
