The Swallow Sidecar Company was founded in 1922 by William Lyons and William Walmsley. In 1934 Lyons formed SS Cars Limited to effectively take over the operation from Walmsley. The SS brand was quite successful; though they had a reputation for having more show than go. The Jaguar name first appeared as a model name on an SS 2½ Litre Sports Saloon introduced in 1936. For political reasons, Lyons changed the name of his company to Jaguar Cars in 1945.

The SS100 built between 1936 and 1941 is today regarded as one of the great pre-war sports cars, however, it was the launch of the legendary Jaguar XK120 at the London Motor Show in 1948 that really put Jaguar on the map. The car caused a sensation, which persuaded Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons to put it into production. The XK120 morphed into the XK140 and ultimately the XK150 and in total, just over 30,000 cars were built over 15 years of production.

In 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show Jaguar introduced the E-Type, which like the XK120 all those years ago, took the motoring world by storm. The body styling was simply gorgeous and technologically the E-Type was an engineering masterpiece and it set new standards in all areas.

Whilst automotive styling is somewhat subjective the E-Type is often ranked atop lists of the most beautiful cars and in fact it has been described by Enzo Ferrari as the most beautiful car ever made. And its not just about the looks as the E-Type is often at the top of other lists such as the best sports car ever built or the most significant cars. It is truly a motoring icon.

As a testament to the success of the E-Type, production evolved through three series from 1961 until 1974 during which time circa 70,000 cars were built.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a factory right hand drive, Australian delivered 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series 2 Fixed Head Coupe. The Jaguar Heritage Certificate on file confirms this factory right hand example was manufactured on the 7th May 1970 with a date of despatch of 21st July 1970. The original distributor is noted as British Leyland Australia, however, the original dealer is not noted. The cars original colour scheme was signal red with a beige interior.

The cars early history is not known, however, the service book with the car confirms it was delivered new into Brisbane. The first service was completed by UK Motors in Campbell Street Bowen Hills on the 23rd June 1971 at 2,450 miles. There are 14 service entries in the book from UK Motors with the last being on the 4th January 1979 at 66,286 miles. There is one subsequent entry in the service book from Mobil Ashgrove on the 27th March 1979 at 69,500 miles.

This E-Type found its way to South Australia and it was acquired in circa 2000 and restored over a number of years by its then owner. The car was understood to be a very well cared for example that was in excellent original condition. It was just getting a little tired and showing its age.

Over an eight year period the car was given a major mechanical refurbishment, which included an engine & gearbox rebuild, all engine ancillaries were overhauled, suspension rebuilt, braking system overhauled and more. A new wiring loom was installed and everything that was needed to be done was done!

The body was repaired where necessary and repainted in its original colour of signal red back in 2001.

Shortly after being restored the car was sold into Perth, Western Australia where it was enjoyed sparingly by its new owner. In 2013 the car was fitted with a modern air conditioning system supplied by Glenn Olsen.

The current owner acquired the car some eighteen months ago, however, he has now acquired a Series 1 fixed head coupe, so this car is now offered for sale.

Today this E-Type presents and drives beautifully. It starts easily first time and immediately settles in to a smooth idle. First impressions are that the engine sounds sweet, and it is! After letting the car warm up its time to hit the open road. You are immediately impressed by the throttle response and overall drivabilty of this car. All of the controls are firm but light. The engine is incredibly responsive and the car just wants to go! In addition to the modern air conditioning system, the car has an upgraded cooling system with electric fans and a Pertronix electronic ignition to improve usability. This is obviously a well sorted E-Type.

The overall presentation of the car is excellent. Whilst painted 18 years ago the paint work is still fresh. It carries a strong depth of colour with a high gloss. You have to look pretty hard to find any blemishes. The overall condition of the external trim, chrome and glass is consistent with the rest of the car it is excellent. The chrome wire wheels, a real feature on any E-Type, are also in excellent condition.

The beige interior is a perfect colour contrast for the red exterior. The cabin of this car is clean and fresh with just the slightest amount of patina starting to show on the trim. All of the dash, instruments and controls are in excellent condition and a real feature of this car.

The engine bay is also very clean and well presented.

The car was taken off the road to be restored in June 2000 and at that time the odometer was 25,289 miles. Today the odometer reads 33,309 miles confirming the car has been used sparingly post restoration covering just over 8,000 miles in some 10 years.

There are books (including an owners manual and the original service book), a tool kit and jack (not photographed) that will accompany the car.

Highlights:

Matching numbers chassis and engine as confirmed by the Heritage Certificate.
Restored in its original colour scheme of signal red with a beige interior.
