Description
One owner since 1972, genuine Silver Mink with Light Teal trim 1968 HK GTS Monaro Bathurst 327 V8. Now for sale from Tamworth, NSW.
The legendary HK Monaro needs no introduction. Launched six months after the rest of the HK range, the sleek, pillarless two-door coupe quickly became the pride of Holden showrooms across Australia. With styling inspired by the great American muscle cars of the late '60s, its long, wide body, flared guards, sweeping roofline and signature rally stripes made it an instant classic - even Ford loyalists couldn't resist its appeal.
The Monaro cemented its reputation on the track when Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland drove the Wyong Motors-entered HK GTS 327 to victory at the 1968 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Bathurst, ahead of the XT GT Falcon. That year, the mighty HK 327 filled 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th places, establishing the Monaro as a true Australian performance legend.
For sale is this stunning very original 1968 HK Monaro GTS Bathurst 327, built at Holden's Pagewood (Sydney) plant and finished in Silver Mink with Light Teal trim and running the original matching numbers 327 V8 engine, 4 speed Saginaw gearbox and Salisbury 10 bolt LSD diff.
The current octogenarian mechanic owner has owned this special car for 53 years buying it from the original owner in 1972. The car was used as family transport as well as competing in super sprints at Oran Park, Eastern Creek and Bathurst. The original 327 motor was rebuilt by Liberty Speed with receipts supplied and the Saginaw gearbox and Salisbury diff have also been rebuilt. The diff features billet axles. The motor still runs the rebuilt factory 4BBL Rochester and the engine rebuild is to factory specs with 290HP achieved on the dyno. The owner has also fitted heavier springs (original springs supplied) and also Performance 15" Minilites. (The original steel wheels and original hub caps are supplied.) The Monaro retains its original exhaust manifolds, spark plug heat shields and 25-gallon fuel tank.
Inside, you'll find the beautiful Light Teal vinyl trim, original crash pad, steering wheel and fully functioning gauges. The owner has fitted NOS carpet and hood lining. There is an aftermarket radio and the Monaro is showing 138,977 miles since new.
This is a true "jump in and drive" car - nothing to spend, just enjoy. The paintwork presents beautifully and the interior remains clean and authentic. Mechanically, it starts, runs, and drives perfectly, having been lovingly maintained for over 50 years by its mechanically trained long-term owner, who purchased it in 1972 from the original owner.
The Monaro is supplied with a receipt file, historic racing photos from the hill climbs in which the owner participated and a lifetime of wonderful memories.
Always garaged and regularly driven in a cool, dry climate, this Monaro is admired wherever it goes. It also comes with a selection of genuine Monaro parts collected over the decades, including a spare unassembled Salisbury differential.
For inspection by appointment in Tamworth, NSW. (Ref: 6740)
If you wish we will gladly arrange a video tour/inspection of the car using WhatsApp and of course there is no issue with door to door enclosed transport anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
