1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport 2-dr Fastback Coupe powered by a no's matching 5.8L 351cui V8 Ford Cleveland 335-series small block engine and driven by a Ford C4 3-spd console-shift automatic transmission.
For 1972, the 3rd generation of Torino was introduced, with saw the Torino redesigned using many characteristics carried over from the previous generation. The 1972 Torino styling emphasized the "long hood short deck" look and had strong elements of coke bottle styling. The Torino line-up was revamped with three models only available - Torino, Gran Torino and Gran Torino Sport. The most radical change for 1972 was a large eggcrate grille in an oval opening and chrome bezels surrounding the headlamps on the Gran Torino's. The Gran Torino Sport was available as a either 2-door hardtop or SportsRoof version.
Overall, the 1972 Torino was a sales success for Ford and a total of nearly half-million units were produced, making it the best-selling intermediate car in the US for 1972. This was the first time Ford had ever outsold the Chevrolet Chevelle since its 1964 introduction. The 1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport 'SportsRoof' was featured in the movie 'Gran Torino', directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
