This Ford Mustang Fastback was discovered in a barn in Florida in a rather hideous condition with rotten floor pans, fenders and a donor 289 cu in engine, but according to the VIN plate was originally a 1967 Fastback GT with the 289 cu in developing 225HP through a 3 speed manual transmission and 3.00 rear axle ratio. The car was imported into the UK in 2011 with the intent of converting it into an as accurate as possible Bullitt replica. It went into a very comprehensive restoration process using original parts where possible, and ended up a complete nut & bolt restoration with new engine, new gearbox, re-upholstered interior, virtually every automotive part renewed, with the body repainted in the correct DuPont Highland Green. The correct 1968 style louvres were inserted, 'turn signal' hood, back-up lights removed as per the film car, rear fender side reflectors fitted, and the correct parts blacked out together with the insertion of the 'chicken wire 'grill. The aerial was re-positioned to the (UK) rear off side fender, something a lot of restorations fail to do. F H Ellis Coachworks (Odiham Hampshire) Aston Martin/Mustang bodywork specialists fitted new floor-pans and fenders, which were all jig checked for shut lines etc. Classic & Modern Engines (Bracknell) completed a full overhaul of a 351 cu in high compression Windsor V8 ex racing Mustang engine (purchased by the owner privately), with new valve springs, ports polished & flowed etc. It now develops over 400HP. Ceramic headers and a 'Magnaflow' exhaust system were also fitted, giving a very healthy 'Bullitt' roar. North American Motors (Farnborough) fitted an all new drive train including a 5 speed TKO 500 Tremec gearbox, balanced prop-shaft and 8' HD axle with Detroit 'Tru Trac' limited slip diff' and 3:50 rear axle ratio. The car was also fitted with a Classic Performance Parts (US) front power disc brake package, Unisteer rack & pinion power assisted steering, new drum brakes, all new hydraulic lines, and Modern Driveline (US) new clutch cable and 'race spec' clutch. Other work includes all new wiring looms fitted, new front lights, LED rear lamp clusters, re-chromed new bumpers and over-riders fitted, new uprated leaf springs, front struts & coils with race-spec 'Linc' shock absorbers, all suspension control parts replaced and polybushed, new 'Champion' aluminium 4 row radiator, 4 barrel Holley 1850 C Carburettor atop an Edelbrock alloy inlet manifold with a 14' Hi Po chrome pancake air filter. Meon Valley Classics painted the bodywork in correct DuPont 'Highland Green' paint, fitted correct 'Bullitt' style door mirror, relocated the aerial position, and fitted the mostly original trim. South Coast Mustangs (Havant) completed the final fettling and fitting of re-upholstered seats, black headlining, centre console, instrument dashboard in the correct woodgrain veneer, door cards, correct period radio, and accurate engine temp and oil pressure gauges in the engine bay as the originals are not up to the job for a high performance engine. The car sits on the correct 'Torq-Thrust' 'D' rims and Goodrich TA 225/70R/15 tyres.
