Apple, Coco-Cola, McDonalds and Nike are brands recognisable the world over. So is Ferrari and interestingly the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer was named The Worlds Strongest Brand in the 2019 Brand Finance Global 500 Report.

Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 out of Alfa Romeos race division as Auto Avio Costruzioni the company built its first car in 1940. The Second World War halted Ferraris dream, which was finally realised in 1947, when the first car bearing his name, the Ferrari125S, was built. From that day on Ferrari race cars dominated the world over, winning race after race and many world championships in Formula One, sports car racing and endurance racing. Ferrari built exclusive sports cars for the road too, but in the early days, this was primarily to fund his motor racing!

The Cavallino Rampate or prancing horse was the symbol chosen by Ferrari and like the golden arches it is recognised by just about every man, woman and child on the planet!

The Ferrari road cars built in the 1940s and early to mid-1950s were built in very small numbers and it was not until the introduction of the 250 series cars that production numbers increased. Almost 1,000 Ferrari 250 GTEs were built from 1959 1963. The 250 Series also contained some of the most special Ferraris ever built, including the Ferrari 250LM, 250 SWB, 250 California Spider and of course the 250 GTO. The 250 Series cars were superseded by the 275 Series cars, the 330 series and cars and later the 365 series cars. The nomenclature designated the cubic capacity of each cylinder. So a Ferrari 250 was powered by a 12 cylinder engine of 2953cc capacity. It was the 250 Series cars that really put Ferrari on the map . . .on the road and of course on the track. Cars like the 250 GT California Spider and 250 GTO have become legends. The 250 model range of road cars was vast and included the 250 Europa, 250 GT SWB, 250 GTE and 250 GT Lusso. One of their most successful models in period was the 250 GT Coupe by Pinin Farina. Its design was simple, yet timelessly elegant.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe by Pinin Farina (250 PF Coupe).

The car on offer was the 107th out of a total of 353 units built. It was fitted with the desirable tipo 128D twin distributor, inside-plug engine, three Weber 36 DCL carburettors, four-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, and Borrani wire wheels. It was delivered new to Milan, Italy and found its way to the USA early in its life. The car was imported into Australia in c2001 by a well-known Ferrari collector in Adelaide. He subsequently acquired a factory right hand drive 250 PF Coupe and decided to sell this car. It was acquired by a Sydney based enthusiast who had some major works done to the car during his ownership, which included an engine rebuild. The car changed hands again in early 2015 when it was acquired by its current owner, a prominent Sydney based enthusiast and collector. At that time the car was red and its new owner decided to repaint the car in the most stunning colour of azzuro blue.

Today the car presents beautifully and the paintwork remains as new. The wire wheels are in excellent condition and are a feature . . . . they look so right on this car. All of the exterior trim, chrome, lenses and the glass are in good condition. Inside the car, the cabin is also in very good condition. Whilst on older re-trim, all of the seats, door cards and rear section are still fresh and present exceptionally well. The feature of any fifties Ferrari is the dash, controls and of course the timber steering wheel, all of which are in very good condition. Under the bonnet everything is clean and fresh. The Columbo V12 is as much a work of art as it is an engineering masterpiece! Slip in behind the wheel . . . take it all in . . . remember to switch on the fuel pump . . . turn the key . . . .allow the fuel pumps to prime the carbs . . . a few pumps on the accelerator . . . push the key . . . . the starter motor whirs and then the V12 bursts to life! You impatiently let the car warm up and then its time. After a few short kilometres its apparent that everything on this car is incredibly tight for a 60 plus year old car! The car hesitates from time to time as everything fully warms up and then its almost like youve flicked a switch and its all systems go. The V12 revs willingly through the rev range, the gear change is precise and the car handles and stops as you would expect.
