Here's a club that celebrates its love of cars while also putting in the effort to make a difference in the wider world

The Classic and Muscle Car Club of South Australia was recently established in Adelaide by a bunch of enthusiasts looking for a club they could really engage with and put their heart and soul into. It has around 400 members with about 300 cars currently on club logbooks.

According to club president Bill Moustakos, its membership tends to focus on cars produced by ‘the big three’ both here and in the USA from 1950 to the present day. Among their ‘golden oldies’ is a black 1951 Mercury coupe that’s been customised and modified in the ‘old school’ style. By contrast another club member owns the only Hellcat in Adelaide – yes, that’s the new 700-plus horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

Between these two interesting automotive bookends there’s a long list of fine high-performance and classic members’ cars including GTHOs and GTR-XU1s. Another standout is a lovely GT40 replica in classic Gulf Stream livery.

While the club has a big focus on restoring cars its members pop up in a range of activities including drag racing and circuit racing.

Elaborating on what makes the club special to him and the members, Bill Moustakos said: “You could call us quite a passionate bunch of enthusiasts at the Classic and Muscle Car Club of South Australia. As well as wanting a club that celebrated the cars we love and provided all the benefits of getting together with a common interest group, we wanted it to have a particular ethos. And that special ethos is about giving something back to the community.”

The club’s community efforts include charity work, in particular in support of children with leukaemia.
