1972 Chrysler Charger E55 – today’s tempter

Big cruiser is an icon

Ask a halfway-interested petrol-head to name a handful of iconic Australian cars and Charger will inevitably be on the list.

That’s not bad going since the coupe was developed in a bit of a hurry on a shoestring budget.

However good packaging with remarkable straight-six engines, and a couple of V8s, plus a clever and catchy ‘Hey Charger’ marketing campaign, saw the car make remarkable inroads.

It’s long been recognised as the best local car never to win Bathurst, where it competed with a six rather than a V8 in the nose.

This E55 coupe is going to be pretty easy to find in the carpark and is running the 275hp 340 with a three-speed auto.

The NSW owner says it’s had a comprehensive restoration, which goes some way towards explaining the $95,000 price.
