Back in 2009, we put together a list of 13 of our favourite one-offs that had been featured in Unique Cars – or advertised for sale (not counting modified cars or ‘specials’). At number six was this Chev Corvette L88
Chevrolet Corvette L88
From Unique Cars #300, Jun/Jul 2009
We travelled all the way to far north Queensland to get a close look at Australia’s only L88. Owned by a Cairns-based Corvette collector, the L88 ‘option’ turned America’s sports car into a street-legal racer and was discreetly supplied for a significant premium to a select few enthusiasts from 1967-69. The main attraction was a ferocious 427ci (7.0-litre) V8 pumping out 410kW. The homologation special also got the race-ready gearbox, suspension and clutch, mischievously labelled ‘heavy duty’, not to mention a fibreglass body with more bulges than a WWF wrestler.
Making its way Down Under via America, Germany, and various Asian countries, where it was raced, the L88 had clocked just 28,000 miles by the time we photographed it amongst the canefields in early 2004. “Mind blowing” was how the owner described driving this snarling beast.
