Chevrolet Camaro SS RS – today’s tempter

Big block special

To say Chevrolet was wrong-footed by Ford’s release of the Mustang back in 1964 would be a gross understatement. Chev staffers from the day reckon it was the top topic of conversation in the design studio.

Of course the company retaliated and this was the answer: the Camaro, launched for the 1967 model year.

As is typical of the era, myriad engine and transmission options were offered, along with several levels of trim.

This SS RS is towards the top of the pecking order, with a 396 big block V8 claiming 325hp from the factory, matched to a four-speed manual trans.

The owner of this South Australia example mentions extensive rebuild work, including the driveline, brakes, and front end. It sits on 15-inch rally wheels.

We reckon they make a handsome alternative to a Mustang and there seem to be a lot less of them on our roads. It’s on the market for $90,000.
