By 1969 the Mustang had fully embraced America’s muscle-car trend with monster engines in one of the lightest bodies available.

Our survey didn’t include the Boss 429 at almost half a million dollars, but arguably it offers a better investment potential than a GTHO Phase 3 for similar money.

In the $80-120,000 range, choices include Boss 302s in excellent order or 428 cubic-inch [7-litre] Cobra-Jet Mach 1s.

Small-block versions of the 1969-70 cars start below $50,000 or you might pick up a 351-powered 1971-73 for less than $40,000.

Asking prices for basic 5.0-litre Mustang coupes have been increasing after lagging for some years behind the less-common 1964-68 cars.

Longer, lower 1971-73s are still the cheapest ‘classic’ Mustangs but hard to find.
